Overview Tirohanga Whānui

We're in the privileged position of safeguarding lives. It's been in our DNA since day one, with a rich history of serving New Zealanders since 1885. From the beginning we've been forward-facing and adaptable, which has never been more important than now. We're seeing growing vulnerability and changing demographics in New Zealand communities that are increasingly impacting people's ability to enjoy vibrant, healthy lives and severely stretching New Zealand's health services. In 2018, and beyond, we remain ready to protect lives and the strength of our communities. We'll continue to get involved where we're needed, because we're willing to serve others, maintaining the tradition of our founders.

He mahi whakahirahira tā mātou ko te tiaki oranga tangata. Mai rā anō tēnei whāinga, me kī kei roto tonu i ō mātou toto DNA, mai i te tau 1885 i whakahirahira te tautiaki i te hunga o Aotearoa. While our emergency ambulance services will always be at the heart of what we do, we believe we can now play a bigger part in helping all those who call New Zealand home, building greater resilience and wellness into their communities. Working with others, we think we can make life better for New Zealanders by helping to improve their welfare and wellbeing. We move into our next chapter with gratitude for the support we receive from so many New Zealanders, and we promise to build on the colossal amounts of trust and respect those living in New Zealand have for us already. We bring the strength of thousands of volunteers and paid staff, and it'll take every single one of us to make our plans happen.

Ahakoa ka noho ko ō mātou waka manaaki tonu te aronui o ā mātou mahi, e whakapono ana mātou ina noa atu ngā mahi mā mātou hei āwhina i ngā tāngata katoa o Aotearoa, mā te whakapakari me te whakahauora i ō rātou hapori. Our story Mō Mātou

While we look to the future, we don't lose sight of who we are and where we come from. Our whakapapa is strong - 900 years ago the Order of St John was established in Jerusalem. It began with a group of monks who established a hospital caring for the sick and the poor regardless of faith, race, gender or class. However, our present organisation stems directly from Queen Victoria's Royal Charter of 1888. This established a Royal Order of Chivalry with the Sovereign as the Head of the Order. From these beginnings, we have built a rich history of contributing service in New Zealand.

Our work in New Zealand started in Christchurch in 1885, responding to a need for first aid care in the community with a new and innovative service. This began a rapid establishment of Hato Hone St John groups throughout New Zealand, including the first nursing division in Dunedin in 1892 and, in 1927, the Hato Hone St John Cadet Programme in Whanganui.

We were in those days an entirely voluntary organisation. Fundraising and community support were crucial to Hato Hone St John then, with the backing of the community to fund services in local areas still vital today.

We have never stood still. From the beginning we've innovated and adapted to respond to those we serve.

Today we're one of the country's largest charities operating an ambulance service that touches the lives of hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders every year, with our highly trained and experienced people, using state of the art equipment and first class clinical expertise. Ordinary New Zealanders maintain the tradition of volunteering to help fellow Kiwis, alongside our professional staff.

We draw our values and our experience not only from our rich history in New Zealand, but from today's wider Hato Hone St John organisation internationally, where our purpose of stepping forward to help the sick and the disadvantaged originated.

Each year we have the opportunity to recognise members who have made an outstanding contribution to our work, through Royal recognition by the Order of St John. The Order also confers a service medal and subsequent bars for long and efficient service. And the Youth programme provides for cadets to be recognised with a Grand Prior's Award. This is all unique to Hato Hone St John - no other organisation in New Zealand is given this opportunity.

We continue to value the unique nature of the Order of St John. We remain committed to recognising the excellent service and outstanding contributions our people make to the lives and wellbeing of New Zealanders, as well as the tradition that has been at the heart of our work ever since we began - stepping forward, when help is needed. For better. For life.

Our Strategic Aims Ngā Whāinga Rautaki

Improving the quality and equity of our services Te whakapiki kounga me te tohanga ōrite o ngā ratonga

Everybody in New Zealand deserves access to the right care at the right time, whoever they are and wherever they live, so we can all have the best possible health and wellness outcomes.

We're committed to delivering high quality, patient-focused healthcare services that contribute to our country's vision that all New Zealanders live well, stay well, get well.

We'll work with partners across the healthcare sector to provide services in new ways - services which are better for patients and help manage the call on health resources overall. We'll expand our emergency ambulance services to embrace more preventative healthcare, and we'll grow our expertise and resources to be better prepared for major incidents and large-scale emergencies.

Importantly, we'll have a stronger focus on making sure our services are equitable for those Māori and Pasifika people made vulnerable by health issues.

Building resilient communities Te whakapakari i ngā hapori

We'll always continue to strive towards being a world-class provider of emergency ambulance services and now we also want to deliver more to our communities, both geographically and to those ethnic groups where the need is greatest. Our ambition is to work with local experts, providing early intervention and compassionate care to vulnerable Kiwis.

We're investing even more to strengthen our existing community programmes, and we're growing new activities that address some of today's underlying problems affecting people's health and wellbeing.

By lending a hand to help build more resilient, connected communities, we hope to make it easier for people to stay well and enjoy their lives.

Partnering to do what's right for New Zealanders Te mahi tahi kia tika ai te mahi mō Aotearoa katoa

We want to stand shoulder to shoulder with other health services to collectively deliver emergency and community healthcare that's right for communities up and down the country.

Our ambition is to partner with those who also work to improve community-based healthcare, so together we can help more Kiwis to reach better health outcomes.

By working with Emergency Service partners, District Health Boards, clinical networks, as well as other health and community partners, we can multiply our efforts for those in the greatest need of our combined services.

Building capability to innovate and adapt Te whakapakari pūmanawa kia auaha kia kakama

The technology that's so rapidly changing our world has the power to do good for the health of New Zealanders, helping them stay safe and well at home and at work.

And because it's one of our ambitions that patients, customers and supporters should be at the centre of everything we do, we're working hard to make sure we innovate to help them achieve this.

It's why we want our products and services to be accessible to all, so we can give people choices, reaching all New Zealanders in ways that are relevant to them and lets them live more independent lives.

Creating a values-led culture He whakatupu ahurea whai tikanga

The heart of any organisation is its people. Here at Hato Hone St John we have 19,000 people coming together to help New Zealanders when they're in need.

Our ambition is to be an organisation of positive people working together because we believe we too are a community - one made up of people working and volunteering together to do their best for our patients, customers, supporters and communities.

We believe, by creating a culture where people feel cared for and can thrive, we're providing an environment where we can deliver our best for those New Zealanders who need our services.

Unifying Hato Hone St John Te whakakotahi i a Hato Hone

The health needs of New Zealanders are changing fast, and we want our organisation to continue evolving to meet these. We're making sure we're fit for the future with changes that help our diverse organisation work together seamlessly, such as making sure people always have the right information they need at the right time, and that our workplaces are ready for the future.

We've also identified 12 foundational improvements that will make the way we do things simpler and more straightforward for our patients, communities, customers and, of course, our people.
