St John :: Education Services Student Information

St John First Aid courses aim to provide you with the skills to be able to act as an emergency first aider in the event of you being first on the scene of a medical or accident emergency.

St John is committed to the provision of a safe and healthy work environment for staff, students and visitors. We ask that you consider your own safety and that of others while on the premises.

Sensitive Course Material
Some of the visual presentations used on courses may cause distress as they depict first aid situations that may trigger an emotional response. If this happens please talk to your tutor, they are trained to assist you in this situation and can provide contacts for support agencies that may be able to help you.

Disabilities and Physical Requirements
The majority of the course is practical and involves group participation. Practice during the class involves touching and being touched. You will be required to demonstrate to the tutor that you are physically able to perform set first aid tasks. If you are unable to perform Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the floor long enough for the tutor to assess competency, then you may not meet the requirements for the First Aid Certificate.

If you have any disabilities or illness, which you feel may affect your performance during the course, please contact the St John office where you registered to discuss this prior to the course commencement date.

Certificate
On the successful completion of your course you will be issued with a St John certificate. The certificate may be posted to you after the course.

NZQA and Unit Standards
If you are already hooked on with NZQA please bring your Record of Learning (ROL) number with you. St John can arrange to have your Unit Standards registered with NZQA at a cost of $1.00 per credit. If you are not already hooked on to NZQA and wish to have the Unit Standards registered, please see your tutor. A $25.00 hook on fee applies.

Assessment
Assessment will take many forms throughout your course. These include written self-assessments and scenario assessment conducted by the course tutor and/or your fellow students.

Appeal Process
You may appeal any assessment decision by putting the appeal in writing to the Regional Training Delivery Manager within one week of the course. The Regional Training Delivery Manager will investigate the assessment procedure to ensure that it was fair, valid and consistent and will then make a decision that will be binding.

Recognition of Prior Learning
An assessment only process can be arranged for those whose First Aid skills are currently competent. The appropriate Unit Standards will then be credited but no certificate will be issued. The fee for this process is available by contacting us.

Learning Difficulties
If you have a learning difficulty, or other disability that makes it difficult for you to be assessed please notify the tutor so another form of assessment may be used and early assistance may be given. Tutors may contact students who appear to be having difficulty with learning during the class to establish effectual remedial measures.

Course Attendance
It is important that the full course is attended for certification. Please do not schedule appointments during the class hours or you will not be able to obtain a certificate. Please make sure you are on time for the course. If you are late due to exceptional circumstances you may be permitted to enter the class up to 30 minutes after the start of the course, providing you are prepared to make up the work that you have missed at a time agreed to by the tutor. Students regardless of their circumstances who arrive later than 30 minutes after the course start will be refused entry and will need to re-enrol on another course. There is a lot to cover and a tutor will not be able to assess you as competent if you miss any of the course.

Complaints
All complaints will be dealt with confidentially and every effort made to come to a satisfactory resolution. Your feedback will help improve our service. If you have any complaints regarding your course, tutor, assessment or venue, please discuss with your tutor at the time, or depending on the nature of the complaint write to any of the following:

The Regional Training Delivery Manager in your Region, or Training Services Manager, St John National Office PO Box 10 043 Wellington

Specific course materials will be provided at the start of the course. A St John First Aid Emergency Handbook will be provided to you for use during the course.
