Saving Baby - Student shares know-how to save a life
Friday 13 November 2009

Whangarei resident Dyan Manning recently completed a St John CPR course and passed on the knowledge to her family. Two days later, her daughter put the skills into practice and saved her newborn baby’s life.

Dyan says, "My daughter remembered what I showed her ... and baby came right!”

Checking on her five-week-old, Dyan’s daughter noticed a blanket and vomit on the baby’s face. The baby was blue. Starting CPR steps, she opened and cleared the airway - and the baby’s breathing began again.

Dyan is grateful for her lovely, healthy granddaughter and for St John.

“I love St John. I would definitely encourage other people to do the CPR training. I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Student feedback has consistently shown that our first aid courses deliver a winning combination. Students leave the courses with the confidence and skills to apply first aid treatment in a range of environments.

Doing a St John First Aid Training course gives you the skills and confidence to make a real difference in an emergency. If you come across a medical or accident emergency - at home, at work, on the sports field or while out driving or shopping - knowing what to do on the spot can make all the difference to a person’s treatment and recovery. You may even find yourself saving a life.

We can help you be confident to take the right steps and provide first aid immediately on the scene when needed. We have been providing first aid training in New Zealand for more than 120 years.

St John believes it is important for as many people as possible to have first aid training and complete regular refresher training. We offer a wide range of first aid courses, with courses that are ideal for workplaces, parents, caregivers, health professionals, sportspeople and other needs.

St John professional tutors pride themselves on making your learning experience rewarding, interesting and fun. Many sessions include practical exercises to add to your learning. Many St John courses carry NZQA credits.

The St John CPR course teaches the life saving skills of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, commonly known as CPR. This is a very practical course and you will learn about scene safety, calling an ambulance and when and how to apply CPR for an adult, child and baby. Knowing how to save a life of a family member, friend or colleague is vital, so why not book a course now?

Funds from our first aid courses help support our ambulance service and charitable activities throughout New Zealand.

Priority Actions:

D: Check Dangers to self, bystanders and patient(s)

R: Check Response using voice and touch

S: Send for Help. Call 111 and ask for ambulance

A: Open and clear the Airway

B: Look, listen and feel for Breathing or other signs of life

C: Start CPR.

For adult CPR, give 30 chest compressions at approximately 100 per minute, then give 2 breaths. Attach a defibrillator as soon as available. Continue ratio of 30:2 compressions to breaths until the ambulance arrives.

For a child or baby, start with 2 breaths and then give 30 compressions. Continue CPR until an ambulance arrives or signs of life return.

No signs of life = no response, not breathing normally, not moving.
