St John :: Friends of the Emergency Department

In times of distress, people need more than treatment. They also need information and support. But because Emergency Departments are always busy, staff often don't have time to give patients and their families the support and reassurance they're looking for. That's where St John Friends of the Emergency Department make such a difference.

St John Friends of the Emergency Department are volunteers that give their time and their care so that people in distress can receive comfort at a time when they really need it - someone to talk to and a hand to hold.

Friends of the Emergency Department currently operates from:

  • Auckland City Hospital
  • North Shore Hospital
  • Waitakare Hospital
  • Thames Hospital
  • Waikato Hospital
  • Rotorua Hospital
  • Tauranga Hospital
  • Whakatane Hospital
  • Palmerston North Hospital
  • Nelson Hospital
  • Christchurch Hospital
  • Timaru Hospital
  • Dunedin Hospital
  • Southland Hospital
Friends of the Emergency Department is being extended to additional hospitals nationwide, with services at Hawkes Bay Hospital scheduled in April 2008.
