First Aid for Workplaces – A Good Practice Guide

The Department of Labour has released the First Aid for Workplaces - A Good Practice Guide which replaces the 2001 Guidance Notes on Providing First Aid Training.

This Good Practice Guide provides employers with guidance on what first aid training and equipment is required. The Guide provides employers with a risk assessment tool to determine the risks in their workplace which leads to selecting first aid training, first aid equipment and numbers of first aiders.

Ensuring the safety of your staff when there is an emergency is the hallmark of a caring employer. Investing in training your staff with St John will give you the confidence and peace of mind you need.

Once you have determined the risks in your workplace, St John has a range of courses that will suit your needs. Along with our regularly scheduled courses we can deliver courses to a group of your staff exclusively, at your place or ours. If you need help in determining the best course for your staff, just give us a call and we will help you find a course that best suits your needs.

We have three courses specifically designed to meet your needs for workplace first aiders:

Our flagship two day Workplace First Aid Course trains students as qualified first aiders confident and competent to provide first aid in any emergency. NZQA Unit Standards are available. This course is suitable for all Workplaces.

Our one day Workplace First Aid Express Course is designed to provide first aiders with the knowledge to recognise life threatening situations and the skills to provide vital assistance before more experienced help arrives. NZQA Unit Standards are available. This course is particularly suitable for low risk workplaces, or for training “assistant” first aiders in a large workplace.

Our seven hour First Aid Refresher Course is the course for people who have completed an initial course and need to refresh/revalidate their certificate. It is recommended that a Refresher Course is completed every two years.

More information on the Good Practice Guide, including the risk assessment tools, can be accessed via the Department of Labour website .
