Successful Ambulance Officer applicants will learn to become proficient in some or all of:
- Patient assessment
- Basic emergency patient care
- Communications (using a range of equipment)
- Moving and transporting patients
- Ambulance driving
- Scene management – ensuring safety, gaining control of crisis situations, and using resources effectively
- Being a team member who people can rely on
- Working with nurses, Doctors and other health professionals
- Communicating with people and other Ambulance services
- Being a member of a valuable part of the health system.
Ambulance Officers demonstrate the following attributes:

- Teamwork – the ability to work together as part of a team
- Professionalism – the ability to achieve outcomes and standards and continuously develop

On applying for a position as an Ambulance Officer, applicants must fulfil the following criteria:
- Applicants must hold a full class ‘1’ New Zealand drivers licence and have a good driving record.
- Applicants for paid roles must be New Zealand Citizens or have permanent residence status.
- Successful reference check
- Successful Police Clearance (arranged by St John)
- Successful completion of a pre employment medical examination and fitness assessment (arranged by St John)
