Join a circle of friends and brighten someone's day

It's easy to become isolated when partners and friends pass on or family members are far away. For people who are unable to get out or are unwell, it can be hard to connect with others.

Hato Hone St John Caring Caller is a friendship-based service for people who are alone or feel isolated in our communities.

Our programme matches those who need a friend with volunteers who understand the need for care and companionship, and who want to make a difference to someone's life. Just having someone ask how they are doing and having a kind, friendly conversation on the phone can brighten their day.

What would I be doing?

If you love a good chat, then this is the perfect volunteering role for you!

We try to make it easy for our clients and volunteers by matching them with callers who have similar interests, and who they would feel comfortable talking to.

On agreed days, you would call your new contacts for an encouraging conversation, sharing items of mutual interest. Many of our callers look forward to their chats as much as their clients do, and they have developed lasting friendships across the age, gender and cultural spectrum.

Caring Caller does not provide medical or helpline services.

How do I become a Caring Caller?

The first thing you need is time. It takes time to make regular meaningful calls, and to develop a friendship. You will also need strong communication skills, compassion, and an appreciation for different cultures.

Checks you can expect before you join our team

• NZ citizenship or valid work visa
• Full police check
• Reference checks

Training and support

Hato Hone St John provides guidance and ongoing support to all our Caring Callers. For this reason we ask for a minimum commitment of 12 months to take up a volunteering role.
