Join the friendly team helping people get to their vital medical and health appointments.
For older people who live alone, or others that are unwell or can't physically access other transport options, Hato Hone St John provides a free Health Shuttle service staffed entirely by volunteers.
You will be transporting people in your community in a Hato Hone St John Health Shuttle who live alone and and are no longer able to drive, people who are unwell and those who can't access other transport. Our service helps people attend healthcare appointments such as doctor visits, dental appointments, specialist appointments or hospital day-stays. Your job is to safely get them there and home again.
Every community has diverse needs and some services transport people to appointments for wellbeing other than health, and the shuttle times and routes could be different for each one.
Many of our patients rely on our Health Shuttles for transport. Not only that, the regular visit from our friendly Hato Hone St John Health Shuttle volunteer is a real highlight, and firm friendships are formed.
"For a lot of people who don't have someone to help them go to medical appointments, it's a great service, and it's a great way to become involved with your community. No two days are the same!"
Rose Keen, Health Shuttle Volunteer
You need to be in good health, have a full clean driver's licence and be confident in using basic technology. You'll also need to appreciate different cultures and enjoy working with older and vulnerable people in your community.
Hato Hone St John provides training and ongoing support to all our volunteers. For our Health Shuttle service, this could include first aid training and a Hato Hone St John driving course, if needed. For this reason we ask for a minimum commitment of 12 months to take up a volunteering role.
