The magnificent scenery between Mt Cook and Timaru was just what ASB’s ‘Bankers on Bikes’ riders needed to take their minds off sore legs and backsides.

“We’d been looking forward to the ride for weeks”, said Greg McAllister, General Manager Regional Relationship Banking. “Some of our people rode just a portion of the 205 kilometres, while other hardy souls tackled the whole distance.”

Organised as part of the partnership between St John and ASB, the inaugural Bankers on Bikes ride, held on 8 March 2012, raised more than $8000 for St John’s work in Timaru.

During the lead up to the event, ASB Timaru’s cycle team combined training with fundraising outside the bank. They held a sausage sizzle while they took turns cycling on a wind trainer.

St John South Island Region Cororate Relationship Coordinator Sarah Wilkinson said that Bankers on Bikes is a unique demonstration of sponsor commitment.

“Many of the riders were pedalling for 12 hours or more, all the while raising money for St John. As a charity, we couldn’t ask for more from a sponsorship partner.”

All the riders who took part in the first Bankers on Bikes are hoping to do it again in 2013.

“St John looks after people in our communities every day”, said Greg McAllister. “Bankers on Bikes is a great opportunity to give something back to them.”
