The 3 day PHEC course provides the knowledge and skills required to deliver immediate advanced first aid assistance in any situation.

  • Students must be 18 years or older to attend this course
  • Ideal for advanced first-aiders who need to treat patients in more isolated locations before handing them over to ambulance and hospital crews
  • There is significant pre-course work required to be completed before attending in-class training. This will be emailed to you once you have registered for the course
  • Qualification requirement for an advanced workplace first-aider which will be relevant for 2 years
  • Take our PHEC Refresher course within 2 years of completing this course to save costs and time to recertify

The 3 day PHEC course provides the knowledge and skills required to deliver immediate advanced first aid assistance in any situation.

In this course, our in-depth lessons and scenario-based activities will give you:

  • the confidence and skills to use CPR, resuscitation, extrication techniques and immediate, advanced first aid assistance in any situation, especially in isolated locations
  • familiarity with common emergency care equipment, airway care, and respiratory support
  • the opportunity to discuss special equipment and conditions specific to your workplace
  • NZQA unit standard 29321 (level 3, 14 credits)
  • a PHEC certificate valid for 2 years upon successful completion
  • an invitation to enrol in our Emergency Response Awareness course* where you can complete post course theory activities and on successful completion receive unit standard 29322 (5 credits) "Demonstrate knowledge of emergency response systems in New Zealand"

Course Content

(Covers NZQA 29321 level 3, 14 credits)

Recognise and provide pre-hospital care including:

  • Scene and hazard management
  • Patient triage/prioritisation
  • CPR with equipment such as airway and oxygen
  • Defibrillator (AED) use
  • Patient monitoring
  • Managing deceased patients
  • Medical or trauma conditions changes
  • Moving patients/extrication
  • Prerequisites & requirements

    Attendees must be:

    • 18 years or older
    • must hold a current first aid certificate that is less than two years old and is comprised of unit standard 6400, or unit standard 23406, or provide proof of equivalent knowledge and skills
    • physically capable of kneeling on the floor to do CPR
    • able to complete assessments in English
    • able to complete significant pre-course work before attending in-class training
