Employees of Hawkins got a close view of how St John helps following a disaster. After the devastating Christchurch earthquake in February 2011, Hawkins construction workers were actively involved with rescuing people from collapsed buildings in the CBD. They worked alongside St John medics and volunteers.
“St John played a huge role in the earthquake, and they rely on donations to do the work that they do”, said Allan Kendrick, a health and safety manager for Hawkins, which is part of the McConnell Group.
Allan declared that he would make a $100 donation from his pay to support St John and issued a challenge to all employees of the McConnell Group to do the same. As a result of the group’s payroll giving, we received $60,000.
"It's so humbling to be here in Christchurch, and I never thought the challenge would eventuate into something this big. I'm so proud of all the staff who helped to raise this much."
The donation was used to purchase an MRX defibrillator and a cache of essential emergency equipment for the Christchurch area.
