"Many on-road staff report that getting distressed, scared or injured children to co-operate with ambulance officers can be difficult. The child's fear makes managing their condition difficult and delay may worsen the child's condition."
The St John Safe Kids programme gives children from pre-school through to their early teens an understanding of emergencies, information on how and when to call an ambulance, an understanding of St John and the skills to identify and help in an emergency situation.
By making the children more familiar with the equipment, noises and uniforms they will hear and see in an emergency, the programme creates positive associations, reduced stress and enables ambulance crews to give faster, more effective assistance.
- Confidence to use the 111 emergency system
Having children dial the correct number in an emergency, speak clearly and give the correct information will mean faster response to the emergency and potentially reduce suffering and save lives.
- Basic first aid
Giving children some basic first aid skills, appropriate to their age, empowers them to deal with, or simply recognise, minor or major injury situations. We don't expect kids to become competent first aiders after one lesson but we do aim to inspire them to at least have a go.
The St John Safe Kids programme is conducted on-site at schools in selected cities throughout New Zealand. At the request of a school, St John educators will visit a class with all of the necessary resources to conduct at 45 to 90 minute lesson. Our presenters have excellent classroom skills and years of experience working with children and ensure maximum participation in the fun, interactive and hands-on sessions. Information booklets for teachers and follow-up exercises are also provided to help reinforce the skills learned throughout the lesson.
The St John Safe Kids programme is currently funded by St John. In order to continue to provide the service to the school community we do ask schools for a donation. The suggested donation is $1 - $2 per student however we do not want any school or student to miss out. If you would like to have the programme at your school but have questions about the donation, please fill out the more information form and the St John representative in your area will contact you.
