The ASB St John in Schools programme provides learning experiences for pre-school, primary and intermediate school aged children to empower them to act in an emergency. Community Educators visit schools across New Zealand to provide young people with the skills and confidence to take action in response to an emergency situation. The programme values children of all ages and recognises their ability to make a difference in an emergency situation.
St John undertakes important work like this as the organisation is committed to driving community health outcomes. The programme provides young people with the skills and knowledge to take responsibility for their own health and well-being and the well-being of others.
We appriciate the support of ASB and ACC who provide national sponsorship for the programme. All we ask of schools is for a gold coin donation from each child where possible as our sponsorship does not cover the full cost for us to deliver this programme.
What happens in a typical ASB St John in Schools session?
In consultation with the school, a trained Community Educator will plan and deliver the programme to a class, or group of classes, at school, in response to a request from a teacher or school administrator. Our experienced educators have excellent classroom skills and child friendly teaching resources – they know how to make the experience fun and interactive for every child.
We currently have the following modules on offer:
- Responding to an emergency
- Injury prevention
- Disaster preparedness
- Clued up camper
Within each of these modules we have different levels available to cater to all different age groups and learning abilities. Each of the sessions are usually between 45-90 minutes long per class. The ASB St John in Schools Programme provides learning experiences for students that relate to the key learning areas of health and physical education, and science in the New Zealand School curriculum
