At St John, we are known for our emergency ambulance service. Here in Northern Region, we treated 187,084 patients last year. But did you know about our world-class education programme ASB St John in Schools, our vibrant youth programme, and our fantastic programmes to reduce social isolation among the elderly and unwell?

Behind the lights and sirens, behind every CPR lesson and behind every phone call to someone lonely, you find our people – the hearts of St John. It’s our people that keep St John ticking. They are the ones saving lives and making a difference every day. Our people all have their own stories that brought them to where they are – their experiences are all unique, special and real.

One of our wonderful people, who was photographed for our “Hearts of St John” exhibition is Millie O'Leary, who works in our Kaiwaka Op Shop.  Here, Millie tells us why she gives back:

"I remember the three ambulances in our driveway.  My son had just passed away. He was 36.  He was the rock of our family.  He was the problem solver and the creator of our celebrations.  He was also a bronchial asthmatic.

Ambulances had been part of his life, and he had seen the inside of them many times. I told myself that one day I would give back to those people who had helped him so much. My whangai mum who raised me always said that you should help other people.

Giving is something that I like to do, and I don’t expect people to give back to me."

When you shop at one of our 19 opportunity shops throughout Northern Region, you’re supporting local community fundraising projects.

Op shop profits go towards purchasing new ambulances and Health Shuttles, and buying vital new equipment for your community; allowing St John to continue its life-saving and life-changing work. Plus, you’ll go home with fantastic pre-loved goods at bargain prices.

Come in-store – to donate, volunteer or shop – and find out why we're New Zealand’s most trusted charity. To find out more information about St John op shops call
