St John Youth programmes – Hannah’s story

St John Youth programmes aim to teach young people how to look after themselves, their family and their community. They’re also a lot of fun!

Hannah loves the time that she spends with St John Youth.

“Being a youth member, you learn first aid and to be a better part of the community. It has given me so much more confidence in myself. It has taught me that I can achieve things when I set my mind to it.”

Skills and confidence gained with St John Youth enabled Hannah to make a difference in a life/death situation that many adults would be at a loss to cope with.

“About a year ago I had an incident at my work where my boss’s baby had stopped breathing. I did CPR on this baby until the ambulance came and during that time she began breathing again.”

The leadership ability shown by Hannah, backed up by first aiding skills she learned at her youth division, is exactly what St John hope young people can gain through the youth programme.

“You know at the end of the day you don’t know what’s going to happen, but you’ve got to try. And I did and she started breathing. It took a lot of confidence to do what I did and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without St John’s help.”

All sorts of young people join St John Youth programmes. They do it to widen their social circle, learn about first aid and health, gain leadership and general life skills and help their communities.

Through our Youth programmes, St John is proud to be contributing to the country’s future.
