As part of this commitment, we’re trialling Australasia’s first electric emergency ambulance to see if an EV ambulance could be a viable solution to help reduce our emissions and integrate sustainable practices into the care we provide.
Supported by our long-standing Major Sponsor, ASB, this groundbreaking trial launched in the mighty Waikato in June, 2024.
Reports
Insights from year one of the trial
A one-year operational evaluation demonstrates the viability of electric vehicles (EVs) in frontline emergency response within a metropolitan environment.
The EV ambulance was assessed across key operational indicators including:
- Incident response deployment
- Energy consumption
- Reliability and uptime
- Operational range
- Fleet integration
- Crew and patient experience
During the 12-month period, the vehicle responded to more than 500 incidents and travelled 13,671km. The trial recorded an estimated reduction of approximately four tonnes of CO₂ emissions compared with a conventional diesel ambulance operating under similar conditions.
Importantly, the EV maintained operational reliability standards equivalent to internal fleet benchmarks. Findings also informed minimum technical specifications and operational thresholds required for future EV ambulance deployment.
The trial identified several critical considerations for wider adoption, including charging infrastructure planning, duty-cycle alignment, battery performance in varied terrain, and lifecycle cost modelling.
The vehicle will now enter phase two testing in Canterbury, based in Lyttelton, to assess performance in colder temperatures and more rural, high-gradient environments.
This evaluation contributes to growing international evidence supporting electrification of specialised emergency service fleets and provides a practical case study for agencies considering similar transitions.
