NZ Thoroughbred Racing Meetings

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing hosts over 300 race meetings annually at 52 racecourses nationwide, from high-profile events like Auckland Cup Week to community-focused country races. Hato Hone St John has been providing vital medical coverage for these events for many years.

In 2007, medical services were centralised under a nationwide contract, ensuring consistent and standardised clinical care. This approach has been highly successful for both Hato Hone St John and the New Zealand racing industry.

Our role is twofold: ensuring the safety of jockeys—given the inherent risks of horse racing—and safeguarding spectators and workers in large, excited crowds.

Key Risks:

While most events result in few injuries, the risk of serious incidents remains high, particularly in steeplechases and hurdles. Weather conditions can also increase the risk of injury.

Treatments Provided:

We often treat skin injuries, sprains, fractures, eye injuries, head and neck injuries, and occasionally cardiac issues.

Ross Gove, Racing Services Manager:

“Hato Hone St John provides an invaluable service to the Thoroughbred Racing Industry, ensuring the health and safety of all participants and the public at race meetings. Their exceptional service is vital to our operations.”
