This book tells the story of the last hundred years of the knights Hospitallers of St John, the great millitant Order of celibate soldiers which had alone survived the wreckage of the crusading ideal of the Middle Ages, carring on a rearguard action against the Turks, first from Rhodes, and then from Malta.
