ASB is pleased to announce its sponsorship of the new-look ASB St John in Schools basic first aid programme in which Kiwi kids learn life-saving skills and the confidence to take action in an emergency.
St John has been running the first aid programme since 2015, and already more than 327,725 pre-school, primary and intermediate-aged students have received practical training and education. ASB’s sponsorship of the programme builds on the bank’s eight-year partnership with St John.
St John Director of Community Health Services Sarah Manley says the charity is delighted with ASB’s sponsorship, “ASB’s contribution allows for further development within the programme with every child receiving a mini ASB St John in Schools first responder first aid kit. The ASB partnership builds on the Government’s support of the programme through ACC, and improves the emergency preparedness and community resilience of the next generation.
“ASB St John in Schools is significant not only for the youth of New Zealand but also for their families, friends and communities who stand to benefit from their first aid knowledge.”
ASB Executive General Manager Marketing and Communications Roger Beaumont says ASB is proud to build its long-standing support of St John, and to take on this new role in supporting education initiatives in classrooms throughout New Zealand.

With a goal to reach 500,000 school aged children over next five years, lives have already been saved thanks to the skills students have been taught through the ASB St John in School sessions. “We think ASB St John in Schools is a fantastic complement to ASB GetWise, New Zealand’s largest school financial literacy programme which has delivered more than 24,000 sessions and reached more than 600,000 registered students in classrooms across the country,” Mr Beaumont says.
About ASB St John in Schools
ASB St John in Schools provides learning experiences for pre-school, primary and intermediate aged children to empower them to act in an emergency. With a commitment to driving community health outcomes, ASB St John in Schools educators provide young people with the skills and knowledge to take responsibility for their own health and well-being and the well-being of others.
In consultation with individual schools, a trained community educator will plan and deliver the programme to a class, or group of classes, at school, in response to a request from a teacher or school administrator. Experienced ASB St John in School educators have excellent classroom skills and child friendly teaching resources – they know how to make the experience fun and interactive for every child.
The current modules focus on: responding in an emergency, disaster preparedness (pilot phase), accident prevention and injury care (pilot phase) and camping.
Within each of these modules there are different levels available to cater to all different age groups and learning abilities.
Each student who takes part in an ASB St John in Schools will receive an ASB St John in Schools first responder first aid kit. The first aid kit contains:

Gloves, cleansing wipes, elastic bandage, roll of tape, plastic tweezers, plasters, sterile gauze and bandage triangle.

ASB and St John
ASB and St John have enjoyed a strong and positive partnership since 2008. ASB is involved with St John in many ways; from volunteering on area committees or as Caring Callers, to contributing to the St John Annual Appeal fundraising. Additionally, all ASB branches nationwide are equipped with an AED (or heart defibrillator) and AED-trained ASB staff.
