Briscoes puts safety first with St John

The Briscoe Group has invested significantly into community health and safety by installing 58 St John defibrillators (AED units) throughout their stores nationwide - one of the first large New Zealand retailers to do so.

After reviewing the Briscoe Group network of Stores (which includes Briscoes Homeware, Rebel Sport and Living & Giving stores), 58 AED units were installed, and St John trained all Briscoe Group staff in their use.

AEDs shock the heart back into rhythm and are essential in the chain of survival for somebody suffering cardiac arrest.

This initiative provides extensive public access to life saving cardiac equipment. Briscoe Group Managing Director, Rod Duke, says the decision was about customer and staff well-being.“Briscoes is committed to staff safety and in the event of an emergency we want to be equipped to deal with a cardiac arrest until St John arrives. Choosing the St John AED was simple as they have proven reliability and are very easy to operate,” he said.

St John Counties Territory Manager, Glenn Metcalfe, says defibrillators can make a significant difference in a life threatening situation.

“Every week thirty-eight New Zealanders experience a cardiac arrest, but only 15% of these people will survive. Having an AED unit on hand can improve a person’s chances of survival by up to 40% so Briscoes Group has made a substantial investment into saving lives,” Mr Metcalfe said.
